How Does The Gym Work?
Every person entering CityROCK will be required to fill in a waiver form whether you are watching or participating.

Our main focus is climbing; we have everything from 16m high walls for sport climbing, to 5m bouldering walls, a dedicated kids section and even a speed climbing wall.

We also offer a studio with yoga and pilates classes and a fully equipped strength and cardio training gym. All our studio classes and gym equipment is designed to improve your climbing but may be used on its own to just get strong.

Want to further your expertise in climbing? Why not sign up for one of our courses.
Our instructors will coach you through the necessary skills.

Highwall Roped Climbing (Sport Climbing)

From beginner to expert, CityROCK offers a fun and challenging climbing experience for all.

Safety Requirements for High wall climbing

  • You must have passed the top rope or lead test to climb. Autobelays require a safety orientation on your first visit.
  • Do not boulder on the high walls or traverse across anchors. Stay on the route and finish on the relevant anchor.
  • The high climbing area is for adults and children over 13 – ALL children under 18 must be supervised by a parent, guardian or coach.
  • Children may not play on the foam pads or comfy Saks.
  • No eating and drinking on the climbing mats.
  • Always double check yourself!  Ensure your harness is fitted correctly, you are clipped or tied in correctly, and your belay is ready before you start climbing.

High wall etiquette

  • We encourage the use of Liquid chalk to help keep our facility clean from chalk dust. Please start all climbs with Liquid chalk and you may use Powdered chalk to top up. Avoid over chalking.
  • Brush the start and or crux holds after you’ve climbed
  • If problems overlap, let the person already on the wall finish. Lead climbers have right of way over top rope climbers.
  • Do not “spray” beta.
Autobelays/ clip in and cLIMB

This is a great introduction to High Climbing as you do not need experience or require a climbing partner. The rope is attached at the top of the wall (around 16m) to a braking system in case of a fall, similar to a car seat belt, and will lower you gently back down to the ground. A harness and shoes are required. A belay test is not necessary. First time visitors will need to do a safety orientation to show you how to safely use the Autobelay systems.

Top Rope Climbing

Requires a team of two: climber and belayer. The belayer stays on the ground and controls the rope attached to the climber using a belay device in the event of a fall.  The rope runs through an anchor at the top of the wall as the climber progresses upward. The routes require stamina as they go up to a height of 16m.

New top rope climbers and belayers: you must pass our compulsory Top Rope Belay test. Climbers must be 13 years or older. Upon completion of the test you will receive a Red/Orange Top Belay Test tag which must be displayed on your harness at all times.

Note: We only use the Grigri belay device for all Top Rope climbing. If you are not familiar with the Grigri we do offer a 10 minute refresher.

Top Rope Safety Video

lEAD Climbing

Lead climbing is inherently more dangerous. Please stay safe. You must bring your own rope and assisted-braking belay device to Lead climb in the gym. The top rope belay test is a prerequisite for the lead test.

Requires a team of two: climber and belayer. The belayer stays on the ground and controls the rope attached to the climber using a belay device in the event of a fall.  The rope is clipped into quick draws by the climber as he progresses up the climbing wall. The quick draws are already in place and climbers do not need to bring their own, they are spaced out every 1-2m. The routes require stamina as they go up to a height of 16m.

Lead climbers and belayers: you must pass our compulsory Lead test.
Upon completion of the test you will receive a Green Lead Test tag which must be displayed on your harness at all times and complete the Lead waiver. Climbers must be 16 years or older.

Bouldering

Bouldering is an exciting and fast growing style of climbing that is very social and a great way for climbers to hone their climbing skills and build strength.

Safety Requirements for Bouldering

  • Use a ‘spotter’ for difficult moves
  • Do not boulder on the high walls
  • The bouldering area is for adults and children over 13 – ALL children under 18 must be supervised and spotted by a parent, guardian or coach
  • Children may not play on the foam pads in the bouldering area.
  • Use the grey jugs to climb down where possible

Bouldering etiquette

  • We encourage the use of Liquid chalk to help keep our facility clean from chalk dust. Please start all climbs with Liquid chalk and you may use Powdered chalk to top up. Avoid over chalking.
  • Take off your harness before bouldering
  • Brush the holds after you’ve climbed
  • If problems overlap, let the person already on the wall finish
  • Do not “spray” beta.

The weather decided that we all need a little more training time for the Rocklands Rally because it was bucketing down in the boulder fields on Saturday 18 June 💔

As such, we’ve made the decision to postpone the 2022 Rocklands Rally to 5–7 August ⚠️

All event tickets, camping at De Pakhuys and event shirts purchased on MMO will roll over to the new event dates. Please note that you have made alternative accommodation arrangements for the weekend then you will need to sort those out independently.

If you can’t make the new event dates and/or you would like a refund for any of your Rocklands Rally purchases, kindly email info@mountainmailorder.co.za.

In the meantime, get to training and we’ll catch you in boulder paradise in August! 🤸‍♀️

Try something new, shake up your workouts and get your body burning with a Muay Thai workshop 🤸‍♂️🥊
CityROCK personal trainer and martial arts enthusiast Blake Buys will be leading this fun cardio class rooted in the foundations of Muay Thai (also called ‘Thai Boxing’).
