CityROCK Cape Town opened it’s doors 14 years ago.
CityROCK is owned by Charles Edelstein, Trish Gaertner and Robert Breyer.
After a decade of complaining about why there is no CityROCK in Jozi, we are finally doing a proper gym in Gauteng.
Robert Breyer grew up in Johannesburg, but got involved in the climbing gym business while living in San Francisco. Planet Granite is one of the leading operators of climbing gyms in the USA, with four facilities on the West Coast, the newest one having opened on November 1, in Portland Oregon.
Charles Edelstein a.k.a. Snort has been a fixture of the South African climbing scene for over 30 years. Originally from Johannesburg, he used to call the Magaliesberg Kloof and Blouberg his hunting ground. Now he does insane day trips to Yellowwood and works as an orthopaedic surgeon on rest days.
Trish Gaertner came to CityROCK via the merger of the CityROCK and Mountain Mail Order retail operations in 2012. Trish runs the retail side of things.
The heart and soul of a climbing gym are the walls. So we decided to hire the best firm in the business to design them for us. Walltopia are hard at work designing what will provide climbers with a lot of entertainment and exercise for many years.
Mike Behr and Wild Exposure built the original CityROCK Cape Town walls 13 years ago. Makes sense to have him do an encore in his own back yard.
He is the general contractor for this gym and is building the actual climbing walls.
The raised roof steel work (16m!) and engineering is being done by CADCON. This is a small job for them, they normally build the likes of power stations and stadiums, but we needed to make sure the climbing walls and top anchors are solid, so we hired them.
The (re) design of the building is being done by DBM Architects in Fourways. They have done health clubs, offices, etc all around Southern Africa. We need to make sure the place will look and feel really cool, so we hired Francois, Wynand, Ilze and Undene to do the job for us.
Robert is project-managing the project.
