CityROCK Cape Town opened it’s doors 14 years ago.

CityROCK is owned by Charles Edelstein, Trish Gaertner and Robert Breyer.

Robert Breyer grew up in Johannesburg but became involved in the climbing gym business while living in San Francisco.  Planet Granite, a group Robert is currently involved in, is one of the leading operators of climbing gyms in the USA, with four facilities on the West Coast.

Charles Edelstein a.k.a. Snort has been a fixture of the South African climbing scene for over 30 years. Originally from Gauteng, he used to call the Magaliesberg Kloofs and Blouberg his hunting ground. Now he day trips to Yellowwood, in the Western Cape, in between his work as an orthopaedic surgeon.

Trish Gaertner came to CityROCK via the merger of the CityROCK and Mountain Mail Order retail operations in 2012. Trish runs the retail side of the business.

The heart and soul of a climbing gym are the walls. We hired the best firm in the business to design them for us. Walltopia designed and what now provides climbers with entertainment and exercise, year round.

Mike Behr and Wild Exposure built the original CityROCK Cape Town walls 13 years ago. He has made an encore this time around in his back yard.

The raised roof steel work (16m!) and engineering were completed by CADCON. With their experience in building power stations and stadiums, we knew they were the right people to engineer our climbing walls and top anchors.

The (re) design of the building was completed by DBM Architects in Fourways. They have designed, among other things, health clubs and offices across southern Africa. We wanted an outstanding look and feel so we hired Francois, Wynand, Ilze and Undene to do the job for us.

Robert Breyer oversaw and managed the project.
