Children love to climb and CityROCK is a place for them to have fun and to develop fine muscle control, gain a sense of achievement and body awareness and for those who take it more seriously, to develop the correct climbing skills.

Any child over the age of 5 can climb at CityROCK once their parent or guardian has signed a child waiver on their behalf. For children under 18 years of age, the waiver must be signed by a parent or legal guardian*. If the parent or guardian will not be present, please bring a photocopy of the adult’s government-issued ID or Drivers licence for verification. *Please note: legal guardians must present proof of guardianship to sign a child’s waiver.

Children must be supervised by their parent or guardian at all times. We do not provide supervision.

Rules and Regulations

  • No children under the age of 5 will be allowed to climb at CityROCK. No exceptions will be made.
  • Children aged 5-12: The Mayhem children’s area is your only place to climb.
  • No swinging from ropes, or monkeying around. No running or jumping. This is not a jungle gym and the trampoline place is in Fourways.
  • No food or drinks are allowed on the mats, please.
  • Climbing shoes are to be worn while on the climbing wall.
  • Parents must have the proper Orange Test Tag to belay.
  • The minimum age for the Orange Top Rope Belay tag is 14 years old.
  • The minimum age for the Green Lead Rope Belay tag is 16.

There are three climbing options for first time children:

Bouldering – This is probably the easiest and least expensive way of getting into climbing. The climbing itself is not high, (between 2 and 3 metres) and therefore do not require a rope. If children get tired, they can jump off onto our soft foam mats. All they need is a pair of climbing shoes and a chalk bag. There is no need for a climbing partner and there are no skills or experience requirements. Bouldering for kids under 14 years is restricted to the children’s boulder wall. Kids under the age of 16 will need adult supervision.

Automatic belay wall – This is an all-time favourite with children and a great introduction to high climbing as you do not need experience nor require a climbing partner. The rope is attached at the top of the wall (8 metres in the kids section and 16 metres in the adult section) to a braking system. In the event of a fall, similar to a car seat belt, the system will lower your child gently back down to the ground. A harness and shoes are required. The children’s section has 4-6 dedicated auto belays.

Children aged  5-12 years: The Mayhem children’s area is your special place to climb.

Top rope climbing – Here the child can climb if they have someone to do the necessary rope work for belaying (The person who will arrest a fall if the child falls). Parents are allowed to belay their child if they have passed the “belay test” which will ensure that they have the necessary skills. The belay test is free of charge. Please enquire about this at the front desk.

Parents who are not climbing do not need to pay an entry fee but need to fill out a waiver form. Please do this online, from the comfort of your home, prior to arriving at CityROCK in order to avoid long delays.

If your kid is a climbing superstar, we have a variety of kids courses and coaching programmes to take their climbing to the next level. Climbing is an internationally recognised sport with provincial, national, international and Olympic competitions.

While inside our facility, regardless of climbing ability, all children under 16 years old must be supervised by a parent, guardian or coach.
