Introductory Top Rope & Belay Course

The best way to get started at CityROCK is to do the Introductory Belay Course.

This will give you a good idea of what the sport is about and familiarise you with the equipment and how to use it.

You will also be given you a tour of the gym and shown the different areas and types of climbing available to you.

Pricing:
R250 per person

What you will learn:

  • Top rope climbing safety procedures
  • Figure 8 tie-in knot
  • Top rope belay skills
  • Auto-belay safety procedures
  • How to use the various climbing and fitness equipment
  • Basic climbing knowledge and technique

When:
The Intro Course is a 1 hour and 45 minute session Monday to Thursday evenings and weekends.

Includes:
Gear rental (shoes and harness), training from a certified climbing instructor and access to the climbing walls, gym and yoga classes after the course until close. Booking is required.

Who should take it:
All levels are welcome. Ages 13 and up.

Best for Beginners

Introductory Bouldering Course

If you’re keen to get into climbing without all the belaying, rope work and high walls! 

Pricing:
R250 per person

What you will learn:

  • Basic safety procedures
  • Falling and spotting technique
  • Boulder etiquette
  • Hold identification
  • Boulder grading explained

When:
This is a once off 1-hour session held on alternate Wednesdays 6-7pm (Cape Town) / Wednesdays 7–8pm (Johannesburg).

Includes:
Gear rental (shoes and harness). Free bouldering after the course. Use of the auto-belays.

Who should take it:
All levels are welcome. Ages 14 and up.

Note:
Bookings are limited. If you do not see a certain date it means that we are fully booked or the date has fallen on a public holiday.

Intermediate to Expert

Lead Climbing Course

Learn to clip your way to the top with this once-off 2 hour lead course.

Pricing:
R380 per person (10% OFF for CityROCK members)

What you will learn:

  • Lead belaying skills
  • Lead climbing techniques
  • Correct clipping of quick draws
  • Correct communication between climber and belayer

When:
Lead courses are available Monday to Thursday.

Includes:
Gear rental (shoes and harness)
15% discount voucher off your lead gear (rope, carabiner & assisted-braking belay device) from the Gear Shop

Who should take it:
All levels are welcome. Ages 16 and up.

Note:
Booking is required and climbers must be 16 years or older.

In order to do the Lead Course you must already have the skills from the Introductory Course, as well as your own gear (rope and assisted-braking belay device) and climbing partner.

Intermediate to Expert

Sport Route Cleaning Course

This course will teach you how to correctly and safely clean a sport climb.

Pricing:
Free for members. Regular day pass for non-members.

What you will need to bring:

  • Regular climbing gear (harness, shoes, and chalk bag)
  • Cleaning gear: quickdraws, slings, biners

When:
Course runs from 7-8pm on Wednesday evenings.

Booking is required.

Who should take it:
All levels are welcome. Ages 16 and up.
